Our vision at Coastal Defenders is to return people to place.
We're helping to create a world where our human, animal + plant relatives thrive in a healthy, sustainable environment. We've created impactful, equitable and sustainable pathways and projects working at the intersection of coastal policy, academia and industry. Through collaborative approaches using systems-based thinking, advocating for policies and practices that protect the natural world while promoting climate, social and economic justice, we're weaving together opportunities to inform
community-led adaptive management.
At Coastal Defenders, we take a holistic approach to protecting the planet for the next seven generations. We recognize that the health of the planet is interconnected with the health of society and the economy. This means we work to promote solutions that address environmental, social and economic challenges simultaneously.
Since our founding in 2020, Coastal Defenders has made a significant impact on environmental policy and practice through the advocacy of a decolonized approach in the protection of our planet and system-impacted people and communities.
We are a grassroots, community-based climate, social + restorative justice non-profit organization focused on creating impactful, sustainable + equitable pathways in environmental guardianship, STEAM + aquatics through raising awareness, advocating for policy + inspiring the next generation of
Coastal Defenders.
Addressing human impacts on our coasts first + foremost means supporting Indigenous nations, people + communities reclaim their land + water guardianship birthrights. We do not set the priorities for local Indigenous nations, instead we offer our knowledge + resources to advance community priorities.
If we're talking about protecting our planet - we should also be talking about protecting each other. If we're talking about loving our planet - we should also be talking about loving each other. Climate, social + restorative justice are all interconnected just as we are.

We acknowledge that we occupy, reside and work on unceded Kumeyaay, Payómkawichum, Nanticoke + Lenni Lenape land + waterways. We respect the people of these nations as the rightful stewards of their territories by refuting colonization, recognizing the genocide committed by the United States, fighting against the systemic racism that remains pervasive in our society and supporting Indigenous resurgence.
